Summer Research and Travel Awards

  • Summer 2017 Research Award

The Campus Honors Program's Summer Research Awards offer Chancellor's Scholars an opportunity to develop and explore a topic of their choice, working on the Urbana-Champaign campus under the supervision of a U. of I. faculty member. The program provides a stipend of $2,000 for eight weeks to those students selected. Students should consider this experience not as employment but as a learning opportunity.

Each student who wishes to apply must identify a member of the University of Illinois faculty working in the student's area of interest. The faculty member should help design (and plan to monitor) an appropriate research project for the student which will culminate in a written research paper. A stipend of $500 will be available to the faculty sponsor to partially defray costs associated with the student's participation in the summer project.

To apply, the student should submit an application form (see below) and a brief supporting statement describing the nature of the research to be conducted and the student's role in the proposed study. The proposal must be cosigned by the faculty sponsor acknowledging his/her agreement to act as supervisor of the project. A selection committee will review the proposals and make awards according to the quality of the proposals submitted and the funds available. The awards will be announced shortly after Spring Break.

At the end of the summer, each recipient must submit a final research report on the work accomplished during the period for which funding has been awarded. This report is due the first day of Fall Semester. In addition, recipients will be expected, if asked, to give an informal presentation to their peers in the CHP.

Some students will apply for summer project funding from other sources besides the Campus Honors Program (e.g., the School of Life Sciences' Hughes Program, the Biotechnology Center, the Center for Compound Semiconductor Microelectronics, and so forth). If you are fortunate enough to receive financial support beyond what the CHP is offering, it is important that you notify us immediately of the nature and amount of the non-CHP support. Because it is not appropriate for researchers to be paid twice for the same research, and because CHP funds are limited, we will need to reallocate our grants in cases where students receive non-CHP support sufficient for the successful completion of their projects.

Applications are due in the CHP Honors Office on March 1, 2017.

  • Summer 2017 Travel Award

Limited funds have been set aside by the Campus Honors Program for the Chancellor's Scholars' Travel Fund to support domestic and foreign travel during the summer for such purposes as studying abroad, taking advantage of an internship opportunity, or gaining access to research resources. Only Chancellor's Scholars are eligible to apply. A maximum of $1,000 will be awarded to each recipient for travel outside the boundaries of the United States ($500 maximum for travel within the U.S.).

To apply, the student should submit an application form (see below) and a brief supporting statement explaining and justifying the purpose for which funds are requested. For example, describe the planned program of study and travel, the nature of the internship, or whatever. Be sure to include relevant details such as the location and duration of the proposed activity, the cost of travel to and from the site, the university or organization sponsoring the internship, and so forth.

At the end of the summer, each recipient must submit a brief report on the work accomplished during the period for which funding has been awarded. This report is due the first day of Fall Semester. In addition, recipients will be expected, if asked, to give an informal presentation to their peers in the CHP.

If you are fortunate enough to receive additional financial support from some other office or program beyond what the Campus Honors Program is providing, it is important that you notify us immediately of the nature and amount of the non-CHP support. If the non-CHP support is sufficient for the successful completion of your planned program of study and travel this summer, the funds we have allotted to you will be reallocated for some other purpose.

Applications are due in the CHP Honors Office on March 1, 2017.
