Summer Research and Travel Awards

  • Summer Research Award

The CHP Summer Research Award provides a stipend of $2,000 for eight weeks for Chancellor's Scholars to explore a topic of their choice, working on the Urbana-Champaign campus under the supervision of a faculty member.

Each student who wishes to apply must identify a member of the University of Illinois faculty working in the student's area of interest. The faculty member should help design and plan to monitor a research project for the student. A stipend of $500 will be available to the faculty sponsor to partially defray costs associated with the student's participation in the summer project.

To apply, the student should submit an application form. Applications are due on March 1st. A selection committee will review the proposals, and the awards will be announced late March.

On the first day of the fall semester, each recipient must submit a final research report, and may be requested to give an informal presentation to their CHP peers.

If a student receives additional financial support from another source beyond what the CHP is providing, the student must notify the CHP in writing of the nature and amount of support. If the non-CHP support is sufficient for the completion of the activity, the CHP funds will be reallocated.

  • Summer Travel Award

The CHP Summer Travel Award supports domestic and foreign travel for such purposes as studying abroad, taking advantage of an internship opportunity or gaining access to research resources. A maximum of $1,000 will be awarded to each recipient for travel outside the boundaries of the United States, and $500 for travel within the U.S.
