“You hanging it up?”
Two months ago I decided that at the end of this summer I should step away from the CHP Director’s office after seventeen delightful years in the Honors House, accept a Fulbright that will put Theresa and me in Western Europe for much of 2014, and retire from the University of Illinois.
Next year looks like great fun; leaving the CHP is hard.
There are three metaphor-bins into which Americans reach now to spice up ordinary life: sports, war, business. Getting something done at the last moment is a ‘shot at the buzzer;’ hold your own in a brisk argument and you’ve ‘won a battle;’ get involved in any large-scale challenge and zap! you’re a ‘stakeholder’ like a fast-and-furious hedge fund. In the general run of things, this seems like a harmless affectation – it’s nice, for a nanosecond, to feel you’re living a high-stakes drama.
